Pine Chemicals Packing and Export: Barrels, Tankers, and COA

Buying pine chemicals in quantity is a logistics exercise as much as a chemistry one. The same product, whether it is gum rosin, pine oil, or terpineol, can be packed and shipped in several ways depending on order volume, destination, and handling capability at the buyer's end. Understanding the options before you place an order saves time, avoids freight surprises, and ensures the product arrives in usable condition.

Packing Options

200 Litre Barrels

The 200 litre (approximately 200 kg net for liquids, density-dependent) steel or HDPE barrel is the standard unit for most chemical trade. For pine chemicals, this means:

  • Mild steel (MS) drums for products that are compatible with unlined steel, such as gum turpentine, dipentene, and pine tar oil
  • HDPE drums for products that may react with metal or where contamination from iron is a concern, such as high-purity terpineol, menthol, and camphor derivatives
  • Lined or stainless steel drums for highly reactive or pH-sensitive products

A standard 20-foot ISO container holds approximately 80 x 200 litre drums, giving a payload of around 16,000 kg (16 MT) depending on product density. A 40-foot container holds around 160 drums. Most international buyers price on a per-MT basis FOB, CFR, or CIF against a drum quantity. Per-drum quotes are sometimes used for smaller orders of 10-20 drums.

ISO Tanker Containers and Road Tankers

For liquid products ordered in bulk, tanker loads eliminate the cost and waste of drums. Shade Shine Pine Industries handles tanker orders in three sizes:

  • 12,000 litre tankers: for regional domestic delivery within India, suited to buyers with tank storage of 15-20 MT capacity
  • 15,000 litre tankers: the most common domestic bulk delivery format
  • 18,000 litre tankers: for high-volume domestic buyers near Kanpur or within accessible road distance

For international export in bulk, ISO tank containers (flexitanks or pressurised ISO tanks) are used. These travel on standard container ships and are compatible with most port discharge facilities. The minimum economic quantity for an ISO tank is typically 16-20 MT of liquid product. Buyers considering this option should confirm their port and warehouse can receive ISO tank discharges.

Sampling Before Bulk Purchase

For new customers or new product specifications, Shade Shine provides samples before commitment to a drum or tanker order. Sample sizes are typically 500 ml to 5 litres depending on the product, sufficient for laboratory analysis, formulation trials, and regulatory compliance testing. Samples are shipped via international courier with appropriate IATA/IMDG dangerous goods declarations where required. Providing your complete specification at the time of the sample request ensures the sample is drawn from stock that matches your requirements.

Certificate of Analysis

Every shipment from Shade Shine Pine Industries is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) covering the parameters relevant to the product: GC purity, specific gravity, refractive index, acid value (where applicable), colour grade, moisture, and any other parameters specified in the purchase order. The COA is prepared per batch and references the batch or lot number marked on the drum or tank. Buyers performing their own incoming quality control can cross-check the COA values against their own laboratory tests. Discrepancies should be reported promptly; holding samples are retained for 90 days.

Indian Export Documentation

Exporting from India involves a defined set of documents that buyers should be aware of, particularly if they are importing for the first time from an Indian supplier:

  • Commercial Invoice: specifies the product, quantity, unit price, total value, and Incoterms. The HS code (Harmonised System code) is listed here and on the packing list.
  • Packing List: itemises all packages, weights, and dimensions. Essential for customs clearance.
  • Bill of Lading or Airway Bill: the transport document issued by the carrier. The original Bill of Lading is a document of title for sea freight.
  • Certificate of Origin: issued by the exporting chamber of commerce or DGFT. May entitle the buyer to preferential duty rates under applicable trade agreements (e.g. ASEAN-India FTA for Thai and Indonesian buyers).
  • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS): required for all chemical shipments. Should include CAS numbers, GHS classification, and emergency contact information.
  • Phytosanitary or other product-specific certificates: not typically required for pine chemicals in synthetic or purified form, but may be needed for certain natural extractives in specific markets.
  • GST Export Documentation: Indian Goods and Services Tax rules require proper export invoicing and LUT (Letter of Undertaking) filing for zero-rated exports.

Getting a Quote

To receive an accurate quote, provide: product name and CAS number if known, grade or purity specification, quantity (in kg or MT) and preferred pack format, delivery terms (FOB Kanpur/Chennai/Mumbai, CIF your port, or ex-works), and destination country. The more complete your enquiry, the faster a meaningful quotation can be prepared.
