Pine Oil Grades 22% to 85%: Which Grade Fits Your Use

Pine oil is a mixture of terpene alcohols, mainly terpineol, produced by the hydration of alpha-pinene or by fractionation of crude pine oils. The grade designation, 22, 32, 42, 65, or 85, refers to the minimum terpineol content by weight. The rest of the composition is other terpene alcohols, terpene hydrocarbons, and small amounts of esters and aldehydes. Each grade has a different odour profile, cleaning power, froth-producing ability, and suitability for regulated applications. Getting the grade right matters.

Pine Oil 22% and 32%: Phenyl Cleaners and Floor Products

The 22% and 32% grades are the mainstay of the Indian phenyl cleaner industry. They are produced at lower purification cost and retain a higher proportion of terpene hydrocarbons alongside the terpineol. This gives them strong pine odour character and good emulsification properties when formulated with a soap or surfactant base.

These grades are used in:

  • White phenyl and black phenyl concentrates for household and institutional cleaning
  • Toilet bowl cleaners and disinfectant floor washes
  • Low-cost general-purpose surface cleaners

The main limitation is consistency: because terpineol content is relatively low, the odour and disinfection efficacy can vary more batch to batch than with purer grades. For formulators who want predictability at scale, the 42% grade is worth the modest extra cost.

Pine Oil 42%: The Versatile Middle Grade

The 42% grade is the most broadly used grade across South Asia. It is clean enough for quality phenyl formulations, strong enough in odour for detergents and fabric softeners, and consistent enough in terpineol content for semi-technical applications. Typical uses include:

  • Premium phenyl and floor-cleaner bases
  • Industrial degreasers and metalworking fluid additives
  • Textile scouring and processing, where pine oil acts as a wetting agent and aids fibre lubrication
  • Ore flotation as a frother in mineral processing

Pine oil at 42% is available from Shade Shine Pine Industries in 200 litre barrels, and tanker loads. It is by far our highest-volume grade.

Pine Oil 65%: Textile and Paint Applications

At 65% terpineol, the oil is noticeably cleaner in smell and lighter in colour than the lower grades. The hydrocarbon fraction is smaller, so it is more appropriate for uses where residue or yellowing could be a problem.

  • Textile auxiliaries: wetting, penetration, and scouring of synthetic fibres where lower hydrocarbon carry-over is needed
  • Paint and varnish: as a slow-evaporating solvent carrier that imparts a mild pine character to the final product
  • Printing ink modifiers
  • Insecticide and pesticide formulations as a solubiliser

Buyers in the paint and coatings sector sometimes specify the specific gravity and refractive index alongside purity grade. Ask for a Certificate of Analysis confirming these parameters before placing a bulk order.

Pine Oil 85%: Near-Pure Terpineol for Perfumery and Specialty Chemicals

The 85% grade overlaps considerably with technical-grade terpineol. At this purity, the hydrocarbon terpene fraction is very low, the odour is clean floral-pine, and it is suitable for uses that demand higher purity:

  • Fragrance compounding: direct use as a note ingredient or as a carrier in fine fragrance bases
  • Pharmaceutical intermediates: terpineol is the precursor to certain synthetic pharmaceutical compounds
  • High-quality household and personal care products where a clean, consistent odour is required
  • Flavour and fragrance industry quality control, where terpineol content is tested against the declared grade

When evaluating 85% pine oil for perfumery use, check the GC profile, not just the terpineol headline number. Alpha-terpineol, beta-terpineol, and gamma-terpineol have quite different odour characters, and their ratio varies by source and process.
