Dihydromyrcenol in Detergents: Why DHM Dominates

Dihydromyrcenol (DHM) is a synthetic terpene alcohol with a sharp, metallic lime-citrus odour that has become the defining fresh note in laundry detergent, fabric conditioner and hard-surface cleaner fragrances worldwide. It is produced industrially from beta pinene: pyrolysis of beta pinene at around 400 degrees Celsius breaks the strained four-membered ring to give myrcene; myrcene is then selectively hydrogenated to dihydromyrcene; acid-catalysed Markovnikov hydration converts dihydromyrcene to the tertiary alcohol, DHM.

What does dihydromyrcenol smell like?

DHM has a cold, metallic, slightly aggressive lime-citrus freshness with an underlying soapy-lavender character. It is not sweet like lemon or floral like bergamot. The odour profile reads immediately as clean and functional to most consumers, which is why it became the backbone of the fresh detergent accord that has dominated laundry fragrance for several decades. At higher dilution the metallic edge softens to reveal a woody-terpenic drydown. Perfumers value its high odour impact relative to its cost: a small percentage of DHM in a blend delivers noticeable freshness.

Why is DHM used in detergent fragrances specifically?

Three properties make DHM particularly well suited to detergent applications:

Alkaline stability

Laundry powders and liquid detergents are formulated at pH values between 9 and 11. Many fragrance ingredients, particularly those with ester linkages such as acetates or benzoates, hydrolyse in strongly alkaline conditions, releasing unwanted odours and losing their intended scent. DHM is a tertiary terpene alcohol with no ester group. It is chemically stable in alkaline wash liquors and does not hydrolyse. It also resists oxidation better than linear terpene aldehydes such as citral, which can degrade in high-pH systems to produce off-notes.

Substantivity on fabric

Although DHM is primarily a top note, it has enough molecular weight and hydrophobicity to deposit on cotton and synthetic fibres during the wash cycle and survive rinse, giving a residual fresh scent on the laundered item. This deposition characteristic is important for fabric conditioner formulations in particular.

Compatibility with surfactant systems

DHM is soluble in ethanol and in fatty alcohol ethoxylate-based surfactant concentrates used in liquid detergent formulation. It does not cause instability, haze or phase separation in typical formulations, which simplifies blending and storage.

How is DHM used in fragrance blending?

In a typical fresh laundry fragrance compound, DHM may be present at 20-40% of the total fragrance weight. It serves as the foundational fresh citrus carrier, onto which other materials such as hedione, galaxolide, linalool and ISO E Super are layered. Because DHM is relatively inexpensive compared to natural citrus materials and is not subject to crop seasonality, it has displaced significant volumes of expressed lemon and lime oils from the detergent fragrance sector.

DHM is also widely used in personal care and hard-surface cleaner fragrances: shower gels, hand soaps, kitchen sprays and toilet rim blocks all routinely include DHM as a core fresh ingredient.

Regulatory and safety considerations

DHM is on the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) permitted list without restriction and is approved for use in rinse-off and leave-on products at standard fragrance levels. It is not a known sensitiser at typical use concentrations. As a tertiary alcohol it biodegrades readily in aerobic wastewater systems, which is relevant for buyers assessing the environmental profile of their detergent formulations.

What volumes are used globally?

DHM is one of the highest-volume synthetic aroma chemicals in the world. Industry estimates put global production in the tens of thousands of tonnes per year. The major producers operate in Europe and China. Because the supply chain starts with beta pinene (from sulphate or gum turpentine), prices follow turpentine market movements to some degree, though the synthesis route adds significant value.

How does DHM perform compared with other fresh terpene ingredients?

Buyers evaluating DHM against alternatives such as linalool, citronellol or terpineol should understand that DHM occupies a specific olfactory niche. Linalool has a more floral, softer fresh character; it is widely used in fine fragrance and personal care but lacks DHM's aggressive citrus metallic punch. Citronellol reads as rose-citrus and is more expensive. Terpineol has a lilac-pine character that positions it in soap and disinfectant fragrances rather than the fresh citrus-laundry space.

DHM's closest functional competitor in fresh detergent perfumery is citral (the mixture of geranial and neral found in lemon grass and litsea cubeba oil). Citral gives a strong lemon note but is relatively unstable at high pH, reacting with amino compounds in certain surfactant systems to form Schiff bases. DHM does not have this problem. For formulators who need a durable fresh note in a high-pH detergent base, DHM is the safer technical choice even at slightly higher cost compared to citral-based materials.

Sourcing and purity considerations

Commercial DHM is assessed primarily by GC purity, with 98% minimum being the standard grade. Key impurities to check are residual dihydromyrcene (the precursor alcohol minus the water of hydration), other C10 terpene alcohols and coloured bodies that affect the water-white appearance expected by fragrance compounders. A good certificate of analysis will show GC purity, specific gravity, refractive index and colour on the Hazen/APHA scale.
