Cleaning Brushes, Rollers, and Spray Guns with MTO: The Right Routine

Cleaning oil-based paint from brushes, rollers, and spray equipment with mineral turpentine oil is fast and economical when you follow a consistent routine. Most painters waste more MTO than necessary because they do not follow a two-stage process and they discard solvent that still has useful life in it. Here is the method we recommend based on five decades in the solvent trade from Kanpur.

The Two-Container Method for Brush Cleaning

One container of clean MTO will not clean a loaded brush efficiently. It becomes saturated with paint quickly and leaves residue in the bristles near the ferrule. The two-container method works far better and stretches each litre of solvent significantly over the course of a working week.

  • Container 1, the dirty wash: Pour a small amount of MTO into the first container. Work the brush against the bottom of the container, pushing and flexing the bristles to release the bulk of the paint. Wipe off as much paint as possible on newspaper before this step to extend how long the solvent stays usable. This container will turn heavily pigmented quickly. Set it aside for settling rather than discarding it.
  • Container 2, the clean rinse: Move the brush to the second container with fresh or lightly used MTO. Work it again until the brush releases only a faint tint of colour. Use a brush comb or your fingers to check for paint trapped near the ferrule, which is where permanent damage starts if cleaning is incomplete. Repeat the rinse if the first pass shows significant colour release.
  • Final step: Wipe the brush on clean lint-free cloth or paper. For natural bristle brushes, a final conditioning rinse with a small amount of pine oil diluted in MTO helps the bristles retain their shape and resilience over time. Hang the brush bristle-down to dry, or lay it flat on a clean surface. Never stand a brush on its bristles while wet.

How to Clean a Roller After Oil-Based Paint

Rollers hold more paint by volume than brushes and need a little more solvent work. Roll out as much paint as you can onto newspaper or scrap board before touching the solvent. Then pour MTO into a paint tray and roll through it several times, squeezing and reloading with the solvent. Pour the heavily pigmented solvent into the dirty wash container described above. Rinse the roller cover in fresh MTO until it runs almost clear. Squeeze dry by hand or with a roller spinner if you have one, reshape the nap, and hang to dry with air circulating through the inside of the cover. A well-cleaned roller cover that is stored dry can be reused for many jobs without quality loss.

Cleaning a Spray Gun with MTO

Spray gun cleaning needs to happen immediately after you finish spraying. Alkyd paint in a gun left overnight will gum up fluid passages, needles, and air caps to the point where soaking alone may not fully clear them. Flush the gun body with MTO within 30 minutes of finishing work. Remove the fluid tip, needle, and air cap, then soak them in MTO for 10 to 15 minutes and clean with a soft-bristle brush. Do not use wire or hard tools on spray passages, which can enlarge orifices and change the spray pattern permanently. Blow through each passage with compressed air after soaking. Store parts sitting in a light film of clean MTO in a sealed container to prevent drying before the next use session.

Can You Reuse Cleaning MTO?

Yes, and you should. The heavily pigmented solvent from Container 1 should not be poured away after a single use. Pour it into a large settling container with a close-fitting lid and leave it undisturbed for several days. The pigment solids settle to the bottom and leave a layer of clear or lightly tinted MTO on top. This can be carefully decanted off and used again for the dirty-wash stage of future cleaning sessions. Only the sludge at the bottom needs to be disposed of. This single practice can cut MTO consumption on the cleaning side of a busy workshop by a meaningful margin over a month.

What About Hardened Paint?

MTO alone will not fully dissolve fully cured alkyd enamel. If a brush has been allowed to dry hard, a specialist brush restorer or a stronger aromatic solvent is needed, and even then recovery is not guaranteed. Prevention is the answer. Never let an oil-paint brush dry without cleaning. If you are stopping mid-job for a meal break, wrap the brush tightly in cling film to exclude air for up to three or four hours. This holds the paint wet without consuming any solvent.

Disposal

Used MTO contaminated with paint solids should not be poured down a drain or onto open ground. Store spent solvent in clearly labelled closed containers. Many municipalities and industrial areas have solvent waste collection arrangements. Follow your local fire and environmental rules for disposal. Do not improvise disposal methods without checking what the rules say for your area.
